Welcome to Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Pramadom

An indoor stadium built to international specifications at Poonkavu in Pramadom grama panchayat limits, was dedicated to the nation on 18th February, 2010.

At a press conference on 13th February 2010, Adoor Prakash, MLA (Minister), said the stadium, named after the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was the first such in the central Travancore region.

Union Ministers and State Ministers attended the inaugural function.

The stadium has been constructed at a cost of Rs.2 crore on 0.15 hectare of land along the Konni-Poonkavu road. An open stadium adjoins it.

The work had been completed with contributions from the local area development funds of Sri Adoor Prakash MLA (Rs.47 lakh), former Defence Minister Sri A.K. Antony (Rs.20 lakh), former Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi (Rs.25 lakh) and the former MPs Thennala Balakrishna Pillai (Rs.10 lakh), P.J. Kurien (Rs.12 lakh) and Anto Antony (Rs.10 lakh), besides Central assistance of Rs.67 lakh.

Sri Adoor Prakash MLA said the Kallada irrigation project had allotted the land of the indoor stadium and the Pramadom grama panchayat of the open stadium. The Kerala Sports Council had contributed Rs.5 lakh for developing the latter.

The MLA said a proposal had been made for setting up a Sport Authority of India school and an athlete training centre at the stadium complex.

He said the indoor stadium had courts for volleyball, badminton, basketball, table tennis, gymnastics and so on, besides two self-contained guest rooms.
